Its History Is Rich
Benton is the most northwestern county in the state of Arkansas. Named for a noted Missouri senator, Thomas Hart Benton, this county was established in 1836. This community was originally known as “Osage”, after a local tribe that used the area for its hunting grounds. In 1906, the town residents decided to change its name to Bentonville.
Agriculture dominated the economy and landscape by the early 1900s. Benton became the largest apple-producing county in the US in 1901. Many residents of Bentonville owned and worked at businesses related to the apple production industry. By the 1930s, the poultry industry started to dominate the area. It remains a big part of the local economy today.
The town of Bentonville is most noted today as the home to Wal-Mart. Sam Walton founded the original Walmart store in Bentonville back in 1950. That store is now the Walmart Museum, which welcomes visitors year round.
Its Economy is Healthy
Bentonville, Arkansas remains the home to Wal-Mart’s headquarters, with thousands of residents holding professional and administrative jobs with the company. Thousands of other residents are employed by various Wal-Mart vendors, who have established satellite offices in Bentonville and surrounding communities.
In addition to Wal-Mart, there are two other Fortune 500 companies that call the area home: Tyson Foods and J.B. Hunt. Many residents of Bentonville commute a short distance to work for one of these two companies, or for other companies that provide support to these economic giants.
With three large economic powerhouses providing the fuel for growth, the rest of the community has seen growth in other job sectors that support the community. The largest sectors for growth include health care, education and professional services.
